Winner is lucky. Generous, too
A TEACHER in Henan Province has become Chinese mainland's most generous lottery winner by donating 10.5 million yuan (US$1.6 million) to charity after claiming the mainland's third biggest-ever jackpot of 258 million yuan.
The winner surnamed He, a native of Henan's Zhumadian City, came alone wearing casual suit and a pair of sunglasses to pick up the money at the provincial welfare lottery center in Zhengzhou on Monday, six days after the prize was drawn, said a center staffer.
He was "a man of few words who acted natural and cool" during the whole process, the staffer said.
He thanked the staffer for bringing him luck with the 50 identical "Double Color Ball" tickets he bought for a total of 100 yuan, the numbers spat out by machine.
A longtime teacher, He said he would keep his job and plans no changes in his current lifestyle despite the big fortune, People's Daily reported yesterday.
He made the donation to Henan Charity Federation immediately after finishing verification of his tickets issued by the China Welfare Lottery.
The donation amount set a record created by Chinese mainland lottery winners.
The old record-holders were a Shanghai winner of 259 million yuan who gave 10.3 million yuan to philanthropy and a Henan winner who gave away 10 million yuan of his 359 million yuan windfall.
After paying a tax bill of 49.5 million yuan, He walked away with a check for 198 million yuan. The donation money was exempt from taxation under China's lottery law.
Another man from Henan set the country's lottery winning record last year when he hit a jackpot of almost 360 million yuan after spending just 176 yuan to buy 88 identical "Double Color Ball" tickets.
The second largest jackpot went to a man from Shanghai, who took home 259 million yuan last August after paying 200 yuan for Double Color Ball tickets.
With two of the top three prize winners, Henan Province has become symbol of luck for lottery players. Many people are traveling there to buy tickets, a boon to the welfare lottery market.
