Witnesses pressured to stay silent over accident
STUDENT witnesses are refusing to comment on a hit-and-run car crash, in which the suspect claimed exemption because he is the son of a police officer, after allegedly coming under pressure from their college. One girl was killed and another injured in the incident.
One unnamed student at Hebei University, where the accident took place, told reporters that witnesses would not talk after college authorities imposed a ban on any public mention of the 掳?accident which took place last Saturday.
Fearful of punishment, students have declined to answer questions from the media, reported the Guangzhou Daily.
One senior student, on condition of remaining 掳?anonymous, said she knew the dead victim Chen Xiao-feng and has been haunted by nightmares ever since she chose to remain silent.
"But you can't ask us to risk our future," she said.
The phrase "my father is Li Gang," which the drunk driver, Li Qiming, is said to have shouted after being forced to stop his car, has proved popular on many online forums.
Many netizens used the sentence as their online signatures, while some have written ironic poems based on it.
Li, who has been detained by police over the incident, is also said to have shouted "sue me if you dare." His father, Li Gang, is the deputy director of the public security bureau in Hebei's Baoding City.
