Woes of mistaken IDs

AN east China farmer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for drug dealing and gun making -- crimes committed by a stranger in south China who stole his identity.

Zheng Guanqun received a notification informing him of the penalty while working at a small flour factory in his hometown in Xieqiao Town of Anhui Province's Fuyang City, according to yesterday's Anhui Business newspaper.

Zheng first learned about the ID theft in 2007 when Jiang Yunhuai, vice director of Xieqiao police station, told him that Guangzhou police in south China had notified them that they had caught a drug dealer with Zheng's ID papers. He tried to contact Guangzhou police to correct the error, but in vain.

The error caused a lot of trouble for Zheng, because he was hardly able to leave his hometown, he told the newspaper. Last year when he went to Anhui's capital Hefei on business, he was caught only 10 minutes after checking into a hotel. His so-called criminal record was immediately sent to local police.

In southwest Chongqing Municipality, a woman is also seeking a police correction after eight years' harassment for being mistakenly labeled a drug user and trafficker on her ID card. The mistake occurred back in 2002 when a neighbor used Hu Ya's personal information when she was caught for drug trafficking.
