Wolf shot dead in city
POLICE shot dead a wolf at around 11am yesterday in the downtown area of east China Hefei City, local newspaper reported today.
The silvery grey wolf was wandering on a busy road in downtown Hefei, apparently calmed and limping a little when a passer by noticed it.
Zhang said she though it was only a dog when it was trotting past her. The wolf was following other pedestrians on the street and a closer look confirmed to her that it was a wolf, Zhang said as quoted by locally based Jianghuai Morning Post today.
The animal later crouched on a parcel of grassland, howling from time to time. Zhang said it looked hungry or sick.
Special police arrived and surrounded the wolf minutes later after Zhang called them. The animal became edgy after it noticed approaching officers and tried to rush out of the circle formed by officers.
Two officers lurking in the grass shot it dead to prevent it from hurting any one in the crowded street.
Police found a collar on the dead wolf?s neck and inferred that it was raised by some one. They said they were still looking for the owner, who would be breaking the law by raising the such dangerous animal in the city.
The only zoo in the city that raised wolves said its staff counted their animals after the wolf was shot dead and no one was missing.
Some residents said some little restaurants might be the owner of the wolf as wolf meat was on their menu, according to the report.
