Woman arrested for AIDS extortion
A WOMAN has been arrested in central China's Henan Province for allegedly leading a gang of four to extort money from drivers by claiming they had AIDS.
Henan Xinmi City's People's Procuratorate Office arrested Ji Qiaozhen for provocation after police received more than 10 extortion reports involving the gang, today's Democracy & Law newspaper reported.
Henan has China's largest number of AIDS patients and such extortion attempts are common, police said.
But police had to put the suspects on bail as there were no special detention houses for the patients, they added.
Ji was arrested because a medical check found she did not have AIDS, while the other three gang members were bailed because they had the virus.
