Woman awaits verdict for killing disable twin sons
A woman pleaded guilty to killing her mentally-retarded twin sons in a court in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province.
Han Qunfeng, 37, said she killed her 13-year-old twins born premature with cerebral palsy as "she worried about their future."
"Their conditions kept worsening and they couldn't even walk while I'm getting old," Han said, adding that she had never gave up their medical treatment for a second.
For the first time, the trial in the Dongguan No. 1 People's Court was broadcasted live on weibo.com, a popular Chinese microblogging website, in response to great public attention to the unusual case.
Han, a former bank clerk, said she fed her sons water mixed with sleeping pills and took seven or eight pills herself on November 22 last year. Then she drank some wine and felt dazed.
"At first, I just want to take my own life, but I was at a loss when thinking about my sons' future. I was so painful," Han said.
She then drowned them in a bathtub and gulped down a lethal dose of pesticide and rat poison in suicide. Her husband discovered this and rushed her to a hospital where she was saved, the court heard.
Han said she had never given up the treatment of the twins since they were diagnosed of cerebral palsy at the age of two.
The court did not make a verdict today.
More than 1,000 mothers across China have appealed for lenien褋y for the poor woman and thousands of web users have signed a petition to the court, according to a report on ifeng.褋om.
