Woman awaits verdict

A FORMER TV anchorwoman, and alleged mistress of a corrupt senior official, is awaiting a court °?ruling on the charge of accepting a luxury sport utility vehicle bought with money from bribes.

Li Yong went on trial at Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in September, but has not yet been sentenced, Southcn.com news website said, citing an unnamed source.

Li, 34, worked for Guangdong Television before being arrested last April over her alleged lover Chen Shaoji's corruption case.

Chen, 65, was the former chairman of Guangdong provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in July for taking almost 30 million yuan (US$4.52 million) in bribes.

The source quoted by the Southcn.com said Li's case was focused on a Land Rover SUV said to have been given to Li by Chen.

According to the source, Li once told Chen?that she was envious of a colleague who drove an SUV. Chen is then said to have asked a Hong Kong businessman to buy Li the SUV?in 2008 - worth an estimated 1.3 million yuan.

Li claimed that she was merely friends with Chen and their relationship had nothing to do with business.
