Woman crime boss jailed for 18 years

THE only woman among 19 suspected crime bosses busted in Chongqing city was today sentenced to 18 years in prison and fined 1.02 million yuan (US$149,400).

Xie Caiping, the sister-in-law of Chongqing's former justice chief and deputy police director Wen Qiang, was convicted of being the head of a mafia-like organization that opened more than 10 casinos in Chongqing, news portal CQnews.net reported today.

Chongqing No.5 Intermediate People's Court also found her guilty of offering bribes for police protection and unlawful imprisonment to terrify the customers of her casinos.

Xie's lover Luo Xuan was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and was fined 200,000 yuan for managing Xie's casinos in the city's Yubei and Nan'an districts. Luo also sheltered Xie in his apartment since the crackdown on criminal rings began in Chongqing.

Former Yubei police officers Guo Sheng and Gan Yong were sentenced to 13 years and 12 years respectively in prison for taking 180,000 yuan bribes in exchange for their protection, reported the Website.
