Woman defends lover over thefts

A MIDDLE-AGED woman in Xi'an defended the man accused of stealing her money and car during a court hearing on Tuesday because she was in love with him.

The 47-year-old woman even hired a lawyer for Tian Yafeng and petitioned the court to punish him leniently, Xi'an-based Chinese Business View reported yesterday.

A court in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, heard the case but did not issue a verdict.

According to the indictment, Tian and the victim met on a social Website and he moved in to her apartment the same day.

Tian allegedly lied to the victim, telling her he was an air force staffer with plans to retire and take a job at Xianyang Airport in April.

On March 25, the woman found her bank card missing when she woke up. Tian later admitted he took the card and 1,200 yuan (US$175.73) from the account, the report said.

On April 9, Tian allegedly sold her car for 6,000 yuan.

He was seized on July 24.

Tian denied the theft charge, arguing in court that he had a romantic relationship with the victim.
