Woman dies, 42 fall illafter breakfast noodles
ONE person died and 42 others are in hospital in a suspected food poisoning case at a hotel in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Friday, local authorities said yesterday.
Among the victims were 10 Shanghai tourists, none of whom was in a life-threatening condition.
The victims, mostly tourists and hotel staff, suffered vomiting and nausea after eating breakfast at the Pearl Garden Hotel in Luding County of the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, the local tourism administration said.
They were sent to the People's Hospital in Luding County for treatment at around 8am, it said.
A 47-year-old woman from Guangzhou died in hospital the same day. The dead woman, surnamed Tan, was a doctor in a hospital in Guangzhou. After having breakfast, she vomited blood, witnesses said.
As of yesterday morning, 42 people were still in hospital, 12 of them in a serious condition.
The patients were 33 tourists, eight hotel staff and the child of a hotel employee.
Experts with the Sichuan provincial disease control and prevention center suspect nitrite poisoning, as lab tests had shown that noodles served on Friday morning in the hotel were tainted by nitrite.
Doctors said nitrite poisoning could be provoked by using industrial salt as common salt.
The hotel is near the Hailuogou (Conch Gully) National Glaciers Park, a major tourist attraction some 300 kilometers from the provincial capital Chengdu.
The Shanghai tourists were said to be in a stable condition and ready to leave hospital with doctors' permission.
