Woman dies after being dumped by city doctors

POLICE have detained five people, including the deputy director of a hospital in nothern China, after an injured, mentally ill woman died when she was dumped in a remote forest.

Two hospital security guards and two taxi drivers who took the woman to the forest were detained, along with the deputy director on duty that night at the Anguo City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hebei Province, the China News Service reported yesterday.

The woman was found dead in a forest in a suburban county on the morning of July 28. Police later discovered she had been treated in the TCM hospital the previous night, according to the report.

The hospital had been called by police the previous evening after the woman was injured in a car accident.

She was taken to hospital, which decided she had only bruises to her leg, back and knees.

But it was established that she was mentally ill and the hospital could not find her relatives, according to hospital officials quoted in the report.

After treating the woman's injuries, the deputy director of the hospital, Zhang, discharged her on the basis she was in good enough health and could not pay for her treatment, police were told.

Zhang asked security guards to remove her and two taxis were commissioned to take her to an abandoned house in a forest in a neighboring county.

A forest security guard found the woman dead the next morning and called police, who are still trying to establish the cause of death and trace her relatives.

Zheng Guoli, deputy director of the Anguo Health Bureau, said the case astonished him, adding that the city had initiated an investigation and launched an ethics education program among doctors.
