Woman dies after fainting at Shenzhen Metro station

THE family members of a woman who died after collapsing and fainting at a Metro station in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, believe she would have survived if she had received prompt and immediate medical help.

A surveillance video footage showed the woman fell on the steps of Exit C of Line 2’s Qianshuiwan Station at 10:29am on February 17, the Shenzhen Metro operator said in a statement yesterday.

Southern Metropolis Daily identified her as Liang Ya, 35, who worked as a manager at IBM’s Shenzhen branch.

After being informed by a  passer-by, the station manager  and other staff reached the spot seven minutes later.

The manager tried to ask Liang some questions but she did not respond. As she was lying with her face down, the manager could not determine her condition, the operator said yesterday.

The Metro staff called police and paramedics at 10:40am. Police arrived at 10:54am and paramedics at 11:17am. She was declared dead at the station itself, the operator said.

Liang’s parents refused an autopsy to find out the cause of her death, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported. They suspect she could have fainted due to hypoglycemia because she did not have her breakfast.

The video showed Liang twice raising her  head and struggling to get up,  suggesting she was alive after the fall.

“Why did they allow my sister to lie on the cold ground for so long? 50 minutes! No one cared about her. No one would even cover her with some clothes,” Liang’s sister said.

She said the video showed Liang was alive after she fell down, and if she had been immediately attended to, she would have lived. Seven people passed by without helping her.

Metro and police officials said they could not move Liang before medical workers arrived because they had no idea what had happened to her and did not know how to help her.
