Woman dies as elevator malfunctions
A WOMAN was killed yesterday, apparently due to an elevator malfunction in her apartment building in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province, local news portal zjol.com.cn reported.
The incident happened about 10:30am when the victim, a 21-year-old surnamed Wang, was traveling between the 17th and 16th floors, the report said.
According to firefighters, the escalator likely dropped suddenly as Wang was entering it. Her body was dragged downwards, but her head was caught in the gap, the report said, without elaborating.
The area was not covered by a surveillance camera, so the exact cause of the woman’s death is unknown.
Other people living in the building were quoted by the Qianjiang Evening News as saying they’d had frequent problems with the elevator.
Its manufacturer, Otis, issued its condolences to Wang’s family, but denied any liability.
The maintenance contract was held by Hangzhou Tongda Elevator Engineering Co, but that company had been blacklisted by the quality watchdog, the report said.
