Woman disfigured in gasoline attack wins payout
A MAN serving a 12-year prison term for pouring gasoline on a girl’s face and setting it alight was yesterday ordered to pay her compensation of more than 1.7 million yuan (US$274,000).
Tao Rukun was found guilty in 2012 of attacking Zhou Yan in 2011, when they were both aged 16 and at school together.
Despite being sent to prison, wrangling over how much compensation Tao should be made to pay had been ongoing for four years.
The matter was resolved yesterday at the Shushan District People’s Court in Hefei, capital of eastern Anhui Province.
The court said the payment should be made within 10 days. If Tao is unable to meet the deadline, his parents will be held liable for the full amount.
At his trial in 2012, prosecutors said Tao attacked Zhou after she rejected his romantic advances. He was found guilty of going to her home on September 17, 2011, where he poured gasoline on her face and set it alight.
The teenager suffered severe burns to her face, neck, hands and legs, and has been confined to hospital ever since.
She has also undergone numerous skin grafts and major surgical procedures to improve her appearance and quality of life, The Beijing News reported.
Zhou’s initial claim for compensation — of almost 4.7 million yuan — began in court in February, China News Service reported.
