Woman fails to overturn verdict over son-beating

A court in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu Province, rejected an appeal yesterday from a woman who was found guilty of beating her 9-year-old adopted son and injuring him.

Li Zhengqin, 50, was originally convicted in September and sentenced to six months behind bars after beating the boy with a back scratcher and a jump rope. Li alleged that she was attempting to teach the child a lesson after he cheated on an exam and failed to finish his homework, according to a Shanghai-based news website Jiemian.

“I apologized to the child, to my husband and to everyone. It’s wrong to beat a child. I don’t want others to do the same and I don’t want the public to picture me as a woman who harms children,” she told the court.

Li further claimed that the boy felt “unsafe” without her. She presented a letter written by the child, which read: “I’m so concerned about you, mom. I want to be with you.”

It was not clear whether Li was serving her sentence in a detention center or had been transferred to prison.

The Nanjing Intermediate People’s Court was unmoved by Li’s appeal and upheld the original sentence imposed by the Nanjing Pukou District People’s Court.

Li’s lawyer, Wang Yongjie, said Li had expected this outcome but plans to launch another appeal at a higher court.

The boy’s biological parents said they hoped the child would be returned to Li, according to media reports.
