Woman gets 15 years for killing syphilis-suffering son

A 20-year-old woman in western China's Chongqing city has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars for poisoning her son in order to end his pains from congenital syphilis.
The young mother fed her 16 months old boy biscuits tainted with rat poison last November and caused his death, Chongqing prosecutors said.
Financial pressure to cover the boy's medical bills was a major motive behind the murder, according to the prosecutors.
The poisoning happened on the morning of November 28, when the mother bought a box of rat poison while holding her boy in her arms at a village pharmacy, prosecutors said.
She told the pharmacy she wanted the drugs to kill rats at her home.
"I couldn't bear to see my son's condition worsening and I only wanted to help him terminate the pains," the woman reportedly told the court.
When she woke up the next day morning, she found her son lying by her side, already dead.
Her relatives grew suspicious of the sudden death. They alerted the police and handed in the rat poison leftovers and milk bottles. The woman was soon arrested. Police concluded the boy was killed by a highly potent rat poison.
