Woman gets leniency over killing a demolition worker

AN appeal court in Jiangsu Province overturned the homicide verdict against a local woman who killed one of the demolition workers surrounding her house and threatening her children and mother.
The Jiangsu Higher People's Court issued final ruling recently to change the conviction against Wang Maling, from Jiangsu's Suqian City, to assault and battery and overrode the sentence by the lower court.
The former sentence against Wang – 10 years of imprisonment – has been commuted to five years behind bars, according to the final ruling.
The court also denied that Wang was unstable in the fatal conflict as a forensic test by a hospital in Xuzhou suggested Wang had mental disorder after her father died.
The court found the victim Yuan Dechun, from the Chulong House Demolition Company, had organized demolition workers to try to tear down the house of Wang's mother Li Keying several times.
Yuan's company was hired by a local developer to demolish the whole block that includes Li's house. They set fire to the door, verbally abused Li and her family, and made threats to them.
Wang had called police but got no help.
Li then went to Wang's home, followed by Yuan and his workers. They surrounded Wang's house on May 30 last year until Wang rushed out and stabbed Yuan to death. Six others were injured in the fight.
