Woman has to pay Customs duty to get her iPad back after she lost it abroad

A WOMAN in Guangzhou had to pay a 10 percent import tax of 200 yuan (US$33.05) to retrieve her iPad, which she had lost on a trip to Europe, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The citizen surnamed Liu misplaced her iPad on a flight in Norway in November and said she was amazed when she received an email from a Norwegian a month later who claimed to have found it on the plane.

The Norwegian shipped Liu’s iPad to Guangzhou after confirming she was the owner. But Liu was told by the post office she had to pay the tax to get her tablet computer back.

Liu said it was hard to understand that she has to pay an import duty for a device she bought in China and had been using for quite a while, as shown by the scratches and her personal data on the iPad.

But the duty can be waived only if proof of purchase such as invoice or customs declaration for the iPad is provided, according to a customs official in Guangzhou.

Liu said she didn’t keep the invoice and didn’t declare the iPad when leaving China, either. She said she had no choice but to pay the duty and she got her iPad back last week.

A 20 percent import tax was levied on the iPad starting in 2010, which spurred intense debate. It was reduced to 10 percent in April 2012, according to an announcement by the General Administration of Customs.
