Woman held after boy dies in knife attack
A 3-YEAR-OLD boy died and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured when a woman wielding a knife attacked them yesterday.
The woman, who was said to be in her 40s, has been detained by police who also took possession of a kitchen knife and a dagger, according to Xinhua news agency.
Police in Beihai in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said an initial investigation suggested the woman might be mentally ill. Their investigation is continuing.
The injured girl is being treated in hospital, Xinhua said.
The relationship between the woman and the children is unkown.
The attack was the second involving children in Guangxi recently.
In September, a man stabbed four children to death as they were making their way to school.
Earlier the same month, in central China’s Hubei Province, a man stabbed three children and a teacher to death and wounded several others at a primary school.
Studies have noted a rise in the prevalence of mental disorders in China, with many people failing to get proper treatment due to a lack of resources and qualified professionals.
