Woman held for assisting brother's suicide

A WOMAN was detained for allegedly assisting her paralyzed brother to commit suicide in a village in central China's Hubei Province, today's Changjiang Times reported.

Liu Defang fed her brother, Liu Deshan, milk mixed with pesticide with the assistance of their maid in Yutang Village on July 8.

Liu Deshan was paralyzed four years ago in a coal mining accident in north Shanxi Province. His family used the compensation of 410,000 yuan (US$64,329) they received from the coal mine to hire a maid to take care of him.

Liu Deshan attempted to commit suicide on many occasions. He finally persuaded his soft-hearted sister, Liu Defang, to feed him pesticide. The sister then allegedly asked the maid to pour pesticide into milk and feed her brother. Her brother then died of poisoning, police told the newspaper.

Liu Defang helped her brother because she could not bear seeing lie in bed depressed, Liu Deshan's brother told the newspaper. She then became very remorseful after her brother's death. The investigation is still ongoing.
