Woman in premature labor dies waiting for doctor

DOCTORS in western China's Shanxi Province allegedly failed to treat a seven-month pregnant woman who went into premature labor, causing her death on the weekend.

This is the allegation made by Sun Qiufang's husband Liu Fusheng after his wife died in his arms while waiting for a doctor to treat her on Saturday.

He claimed that the hospital merely examined her without giving her any treatment and when her condition got worse he couldn't find any doctors to help her, Xi'an Evening News reported.

The hospital responded that only a few doctors were on duty on Saturdays and that a female doctor was performing a caesarean section while Sun was waiting to receive treatment.

"She was diagnosed as giving premature birth but her family refused to keep the baby," a section director of the hospital said: "We suspected her of having heart problems."

Sun was admitted to the People's Hospital in Qian County when she started suffering sudden pains at 6:30pm. She was declared dead at around 9:30pm after 30 to 40 minutes of emergency treatment.

But Liu insisted that his wife had stopped breathing before a doctor finally arrived to treat her.

The hospital allegedly wanted to pay 55,000 yuan (US$8,613) to compensate Sun's family. But Liu refused it.

He said: "The hospital tried to escape from their responsibility."
