Woman in road crash shot dead, police find

A WOMAN at first said to have died in a traffic accident was found to have been shot dead, according to a police autopsy requested by her family.

The case, in Zhuji City in the eastern Zhejiang Province last week, attracted wide public attention over the weekend, not only because of the error by local police but because it was the second shooting there in a week.

Yuan Wenmei, 55, was shot outside a bank last week in the suburban Taozhu area of the city. However, she managed to drive her car a few meters, according to the local Qian-jiang Evening News yesterday. A bullet was later found in her head.

An investigation by Zhuji police continued yesterday. They said the killer might have a criminal record and was apparently familiar with making a silencer for guns.

Yuan was shot about 3pm on Monday last week when she left the bank, got into her car and began to drive away.

At a slow speed she collided with a minibus, hit a motorcycle and crashed into a telephone booth, passing out on the steering wheel.

Doctors spent days trying to save her, but Yuan was pronounced dead last Friday in hospital.

The police firstly claimed Yuan had died accidentally, pierced by her hairpin.

This conclusion failed to convince her family, who demanded an autopsy.

As a result of that, a bullet was found in Yuan's neck.

According to surveillance cameras records, Yuan had a short conversation with a man dressed in black, who is considered a suspect, after she left the bank.

However, the cameras did not capture the moment she was shot.

The video shows the man helping Yuan move a motorcycle blocking her car, but both people moved into the camera's blind zone around the time she was shot.

Police said Yuan was not robbed.

Six days ago, a 34-year-old woman surnamed Jiang was shot near Yongping Road in the city, according to police. She was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
