Woman jailed for sneaking mainland moms to HK
A woman was sentenced to 10 months by a Hong Kong court for making false claims to the immigration authority in order to help a mainland pregnant woman give birth in the special administrative region.
Xu Li, also a mainlander, was found by the Shatin Magistracy to have arranged mothers-to-be from mainland to deliver babies in Hong Kong, charging several thousand yuan each since 2010. Xu admitted that her visa type forbids her to work in Hong Kong.
Xu accompanied a mainland pregnant woman to cross the border to Hong Kong on January 15. Xu lied to immigration officers when asked whether she knew the woman, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported today.
The Immigration Department brought charges against Xu after finding she acted as an agent for mainland women to have babies in Hong Kong.
This is the first case in which an agent was sentenced as Hong Kong deepened its efforts to restrict mainland mothers to give birth in the territory.
Mainland women have chosen to give birth in Hong Kong partly to circumvent the country's one-child policy and also to gain Hong Kong citizenship for their babies.
