Woman jailed for trafficking baby boys
THE last suspect to be tried in a high-profile baby-trafficking case has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined 5,000 yuan (US$763), said a court yesterday.
Zhao Meichang, a member of a gang based in southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, admitted helping to transport two Vietnamese baby boys from Dongxing City in Guangxi to Lufeng City in Guangdong in July 2011, the Intermediate People’s Court in Fangchenggang City said.
The 56-year-old told the court she visited Dongxing, which borders Vietnam, and “was tricked by a Vietnamese friend into committing the crime” for which she would be paid 1,000 yuan. Zhao, who was born in Vietnam and became a Chinese citizen after marrying a Chinese in Guangdong in 1993, was apprehended in Guangdong in July last year, several months after final sentences had been handed down to 23 other members of the gang.
Huang Qingheng, the mastermind, was sentenced to death, and the rest were given prison sentences ranging from 22 months to life.
In 2010 and 2011, the gang sold 20 babies and young children who were either born in Vietnam or to Vietnamese women who were brought across the border to give birth in China, the court said.
Eleven of the trafficked babies and children were later rescued by police.
