Woman jailed in burning death of drunken intruder
A woman in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, was sentenced to three years for not preventing her mentally deranged roommate from burning a drunken intruder to death.
The woman was charged with murder, while her roommate was exempted from criminal responsibility and released due to her mental disease. The court didn't reveal the names of the two women, News Express reported today.
The defendant told the police that she and her roommate, both over 30, got to know each other in a deserted workshop in Xicheng Village and began to live together in July 2011. They seldom communicated with others and made a living scavenging wastes. She said she knew nothing about her mental status.
The convict said that one night last November, a drunken man broke into their room and started to abuse them when they had already gone to bed. She tried to force the man out and hit him in the shoulder with a stick. Her roommate joined in the fight.
The man fell and passed out. Her roommate then set him on fire. Doctors later found that the wound on the man was not fatal. He was actually burned alive.
The convict just watched and walked around the man who was set ablaze. Some villagers saw the fire at the midnight and found her roommate was adding straws on the fire.
Security guards from a nearby factory arrived, put out the fire and reported to the police. Both women were detained on criminal charges.
The court said the women's fight against the intruder was justified but it was an act of murder to burn the man when he already passed out.
The court said though the defender did not set the fire herself, she was responsible for the man's death as she didn't stop her roommate.
