Woman kidnaps 15-month-old grandson
A GRANDMOTHER was detained by Foshan police in Guangdong Province yesterday for kidnapping her 15-month old grandson and demanding a ransom of 300,000 yuan (US$43,900).
The 47-year-old woman surnamed Wei met her daughter surnamed Yang on a bus at about 10am on Saturday in Dali Town.
Yang invited Wei to her home appliance repair shop to have lunch, but Wei only stayed for a short while and said she would take the grandson Haozai to her eldest son?s home nearby, the Guangzhou-based Information Times reported today.
Yang went to see them at noon but found both were gone. Her brother said their mother stayed only for a short while and left.
"I have taken Haozai away from Dali. You have to pay 300,000 yuan into my account within five hours, otherwise Haozai will be poisoned to death," Wei allegedly told Yang over the phone.
She and her husband surnamed Li searched for their son but failed.
They called Yang several times and pleaded with her to release the child, but Yang refused, so Li called police.
Police checked all the video monitors nearby and found Yang in a community opposite Nanhai TCM Hospital with the child.
Yang, who had a gambling addiction, had had a poor relationship with her family for more than 10 years.
She thought even if the kidnap failed, her daughter wouldn't send her to prison anyway, the report said.
