Woman kills 2 with poison to claim their life insurance

AN insurance saleswoman was arrested in central Henan Province for poisoning her mentally retarded brother-in-law and a neighbor's son to death to cash in their life insurance.

Police in Shangqiu City said the suspect Zhang Rong bought three life insurances for her 53-year-old brother-in-law surnamed Ran, who was looked after by Zhang and her husband. On January 7 this year, Zhang took Ran on her moped to a marketplace where she asked him to drink a glass of water containing four toxic pills to "prevent from catching a cold."

She then lured Ran to drive her moped home along a busy road in an attempt to disguise his death as an ordinary traffic accident.

But police ruled out the possibility of an accident after investigation and found Zhang suspicious as she fiercely protested against an autopsy.

After her arrest, Zhang admitted that she killed her neighbor's son five years ago for his life insurance. Zhang lent 2,000 yuan (US$305) to the boy's family to buy insurance, but she got angry because the family didn't pay her back. So she put toxic pills in the boy's meal and killed him. The boy's family gave Zhang 20,000 yuan out of their life insurance.
