Woman mauled by tiger sues animal park over her injuries
A WOMAN mauled by a tiger after getting out of her car at a wild animal park in Beijing is suing the park, saying that she hadn’t been fully informed of the dangers and that she had only left the vehicle because she was carsick.
Her mother was attacked and killed by another tiger after she left the car to try to save her daughter who had been dragged away.
Badaling Wildlife World yesterday confirmed media reports that the survivor, identified only by her surname, Zhao, is requesting 1.5 million yuan (US$223,000) for her injuries and psychological trauma and 1.24 million yuan in compensation for her late mother.
Spokesman Cao Zhijie said yesterday that the park wasn’t responsible, but was willing to pay some compensation “out of our humanity.”
Zhao said a park official in a nearby vehicle failed to come to the rescue when the incident occurred, The Beijing Times reported in what it said was her first interview since the July 23 incident.
She told the newspaper she signed an agreement not to leave her vehicle without knowing what it was and thinking it was some kind of registration to enter the park. The ticket seller had not made it clear, she said.
Quoting Cao, the newspaper said that a government investigation had absolved the park of any responsibility.
The park would only consider compensating the family out of a moral obligation, Cao said.
Citing Zhao’s father, the newspaper said that the park had agreed to pay 745,000 yuan in compensation for Zhao’s injuries and had settled on 1.2 million compensation for the death of Zhao’s mother.
When the original incident was reported in the media, it triggered an uproar online, with most users siding with the park, criticizing Zhao for violating park rules and ignoring warning signs.
The request for compensation created another wave of online criticism.
“Why always trying to find excuses? The family has a terrible safety awareness. You said you couldn’t see the sign and so did your husband. Who is to blame?” was one comment on Weibo.
