Woman not told of daughter's missing for 18 years

A woman in Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, who had seen her daughter for 18 years after she divorced her husband, sought media help to locate her daughter.

Luo Shuifang, 48, asked the Chongqing Evening News to help find her missing daughter who would be 20 years old now, the paper reported today.

Luo and her husband divorced in 1992 and the custody of their only daughter was awarded to the father, Wei Si. Luo asked to see her daughter several times after the divorce but Wei either said the girl went out of town or she didn't want to meet her mother.

It was not until last month that Luo learnt from Wei the girl had been missing for 18 years. Wei confessed he lost the girl in a wet market in 1993 and had kept it a secret for fear Luo would sue him.

Wei didn't report the girl's missing to police immediately as he panicked and didn't know what to do at that time.
