Woman pulled from building debris after 23 hours
A 24-YEAR-OLD woman was rescued from the debris of a collapsed building in east China's Ningbo City yesterday morning, nearly 23 hours after she had been buried inside.
The woman surnamed Dong was pulled out of the debris of the six-story building at about 10:40am. She is said to have suffered leg injuries but was in a stable condition in hospital, local government officials said.
The building in a community in the city's Jiangdong District collapsed shortly after midday on Sunday just hours after cracks had appeared on the structure.
Most of the families living there had been evacuated during the morning but Dong and a 21-year-old woman who shared an apartment on the second floor were still in the building when it collapsed.
Dong's roommate, who has not been named, was pulled out of the debris at 4:45pm on Sunday but died in hospital around three hours later.
Dong was located by rescuers at 6:55am yesterday and supplied with oxygen and food and water through a small hole, officials said.
A man surnamed Chen, the boyfriend of the woman who died, told the Qianjiang Evening News that she called him at 12:15pm on Sunday, crying for help with a weak voice.
She said she had been sleeping when she suddenly felt something like an earthquake and then the entire building collapsed with bricks falling on top of her.
Just before the collapse, a resident living in a building opposite told the newspaper he saw a young woman on a second-floor balcony making a call.
She was wearing pajamas and had yellow hair. Suddenly the building collapsed and thick dust rising from the scene hid her from sight, he said. The woman was believed to be Dong's roommate.
Local government officials told Xinhua news agency that they had knocked on the door of the women's apartment several times prior to the evacuation, but no one answered.
A total of 256 households in nearby buildings have been evacuated and are staying in local hotels, Xinhua said.
Ningbo's housing authority said the building's base had no damp-proof coating, as was common practice in the late 1980s, China News Service reported.
Decades of soaking by rain had undermined an underground load-bearing wall, leading to the collapse. The building was erected in 1989 and housed 18 families.
An investigation is ongoing.
