Woman rescued after coworker starts hostage drama

A WOMAN working at a factory in Yangzhou, Zhejiang Province, was rescued after being held hostage at knifepoint by her coworker for around three hours today.

The 40-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, is a kitchen worker at the Yangzhou No. 2 Power Plant and appeared uninjured after she was saved at around 3pm.

But the suspect remained locked inside a room on the factory's second floor by 3:45pm and threatened to commit suicide if police broke into the room, Yangzhou Television Station reported.

The 1.60-meter-tall suspect is said to be a Sichuan Province native and a newcomer to the plant. He might be suffering from a psychological disorder and got agitated after being swindled at the local railway station just after arriving in the city.

The surrounding area has been cordoned off and medical professionals are on the scene, the report said.
