Woman says she suffocated parents

POLICE in Guangdong Province will carry out psychiatric tests on a young woman who confessed to suffocating her parents, chopping up their bodies and stuffing them into garbage bags because she wanted to stop them from quarreling.

The 18-year-old, identified only by her surname, Qi, remained in the family's rented apartment with the bodies for four days before police discovered the grisly scene on Tuesday, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Officers were called to the residence in a Zhongshan City village after neighbors complained of foul smells to the landlord and he visited the flat to investigate. When the girl refused to open the door for the landlord, he used a ladder to look through the bathroom window and saw traces of blood on the floor, the report said.

The girl, the couple's only child, was found lying half-naked under a blood-stained quilt when police broke into the apartment, according to the newspaper.

Witnesses told reporters that black garbage bags and blood were all over the bed and the apartment's floor.

Police left the scene with a fruit knife, hammer, kitchen knife and more than 40 boxes of evidence.

Qi told police she killed her parents, both 49, on the night of September 11 after they quarreled and her mother threatened to divorce her father. She said her parents continued to curse each other even after she tried to calm them down.

To put an end to the noise, Qi said she tied up her mother and placed a plastic bag over her head. The woman died about a half hour later.

Dad helpless

The father was physically unable to stop his daughter because he was weak and bedridden from a car accident and also suffered blood clots in his brain, the report said.

He then asked the daughter to turn herself in to police. Qi said she killed her father in the same manner because she was "scared," according to the newspaper.

The young woman then bought a fruit knife, hammer and garbage bags. She told police she dismembered the bodies and was planning to get rid of them.

The family, natives of Henan Province, moved to the village about a year ago, and their daughter seldom talked to neighbors, the report said.

Many of the family's neighbors said Qi appeared calm when they saw her after September 11 and asked about her parents' whereabouts. She told them the couple went back to their hometown in Henan.

Police said they were seeking to determine why neighbors didn't hear any shouting from the family on the night of the murders.
