Woman seeks payment in video bribes case

A WOMAN is demanding 50,000 yuan (US$7,323) compensation from a court after three of its judges were punished because of a video she put online showing them soliciting 19,000 yuan from her in bribes two years ago.

Chen Bentao and Zhao Shiguo, judges in Fanzi District court in Weifang City, Shandong Province, were reprimanded. Huang Liangdong, deputy head of the court, was also reprimanded for trying to negotiate compensation after the video went public.

Chen Qin's lawyer, Huang Hongwei, said they could not accept the judges' punishment of just reprimands for practically blackmailing them and defaming the legal system, Beijing News reported yesterday.

Chen Bentao charged Chen Qin 19,000 yuan as a "case handling fee" in April 2008. Chen Bentao told her several times the money was for the court, not for him personally, according to the video Chen Qin secretly taped.

Chen Qin and Huang Hongwei sent the video to Chen Bentao, demanding he return the money and 50,000 yuan for mental distress.

Huang Liangdong, vice president of the court, and several other judges contacted Chen Qin and apologized. They negotiated how much the court should return to Chen Qin, but their meeting was also being taped.

The court paid 22,000 yuan to Chen Qin. Not satisfied, Chen gave the story to the Wuhan Morning Post.

The Fangzi District government refused to comment, saying Party disciplinary watchdogs were still investigating.

The lawyer said the punishment was insufficient and the judges should be sacked.
