Woman sentenced for stealing newborn girl

A WOMAN in northwestern China was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday after she impersonated a nurse to steal a newborn baby from a hospital to hide an abortion from her boyfriend.

Ge Qianru, 20, from a suburb of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, was charged with child abduction and ordered to compensate 10,000 yuan (US$1,464) to the girl's family.

The court said it handed down a lenient sentence because Ge didn't hurt the baby and confessed to the police after being arrested, reported Chinese Business View.

Her motive was to fool her boyfriend, who worked in southern China's Guangdong Province and didn't know Ge aborted their child after six months of pregnancy.

Questioned many times by her boyfriend, Ge sought to buy a child but failed. She finally came up to the idea of kidnapping one.

Dressed in a nurse's uniform, Ge entered Zhang Lanfang's maternity room at 5am on November 21 last year and took her child, saying the doctor ordered a test on the girl.

She changed into casual clothes in a bathroom and left the hospital quickly.

It was not until three hours that a doctor told the family there'd been no test.

A surveillance videotape helped police confirm the fake nurse's identity. Ge was arrested when she was taking the feverish baby to see doctors in Guangdong at 8pm on November 30.

Yan Xiaohong, the father, said Ge was forgiven and welcomed to see the baby again if she wished.
