Woman still pregnant after abortion surgery
A woman who had an abortion surgery but found she was still pregnant two months later is demanding compensation from a hospital in Chongqing, southwest China.
The woman surnamed Li had the surgery in the city's Huaxi Maternity Hospital in April, but an ultrasound scan in another hospital on June 19 found she had been pregnant for 13 weeks, Chongqing Evening News reported today.
The Huaxi Maternity Hospital admitted the first surgery failed and performed a second surgery for Li for free, but denied the first one was a medical accident. Wu Qiong, a hospital official, told the newspaper that such rare cases can be found in gynecology textbooks. Wu said Li was also to blame because she didn't come back for a post-surgery check.
The hospital rejected Li's request for a 60,000-yuan compensation and would like to settle the dispute in court.
An unnamed medical expert said negligence and poor skill led to the abortion failure.
