Woman tried in killing of her attempted rapist

AN 18-year-old woman who killed a middle-aged stranger after he coaxed her into his home, locked her inside and tried to rape her, is standing trial for murder in Guangzhou, capital of southern China's Guangdong Province.

The defendant's attorney and prosecutors argued at the first court hearing yesterday whether it's proper to indict the woman.

The man, Yang Jinyuan, in his 50s, was killed when the woman stabbed him and bashed his head with the back of a knife. Yang received multiple stab wounds but died from blows to his head.

The woman, whose name was not revealed by the court, met the self-employed porter outside the Guangzhou Railway Station on May 28. She bought a ticket for a train departing the next day, and was left with only about 50 yuan (US$7.92). Yang offered to share his room at a cheap price.

But Yang demanded sex, she said, and threatened to kill her if she tried to flee. When the naked man approached her, she stabbed him in the collarbone. He died after an intense fight ensued.

The prosecutors said the woman was trying to protect herself at first. But they said after Yang lost the ability to hurt her, she still stabbed him and bashed his head, indicating murder.

The woman said she only struck his head after he tried to climb onto the bed to grab the weapon. Her attorney argued that inside a locked room and under threats from the man, the woman had little time to respond and her actions were therefore self-defense.
