Woman who falls into manhole succumbs to severe burns
A woman who suffered 99 percent burns over her body surface after she fell into a hot water valve manhole on the sidewalk died last night in a Beijing hospital, doctors confirmed.
Yang Erjing, 27, was seriously burned by scalding water when the cover of the manhole collapsed on Beilishi Road, east of the Wuhua Building, on April 1. The Beijing News reported today.
Yang's coworker surnamed Ma and another pedestrian pulled her up within one minute, but it was too late because "her skin began to peel off," Ma told the Beijing News.
Yang was rushed to the Jishuitan Hospital and was treated in the intensive care unit until her death. "Over 90 percent of her body was deeply scalded and she suffered multiple organ failure," the hospital said in a dying notice.
Preliminary investigation showed the hot water pipe was leaking and eroded the soil under the pavement. The owner of the Wuhua Building uses the heating pipeline has paid 320,000 yuan (US$50,752) for Yang's treatment.
But the Xicheng District work safety supervisor said an official investigation is ongoing to determine who are responsible for the fatal accident, the Beijing News reported.
