Woman who saved fall toddler leaves hospital
THE woman who risked her own life to save a toddler falling from a 10th-floor apartment in east Hangzhou was discharged from hospital yesterday. The girl is due to leave hospital today.
Two-year-old Zhang Fangyu, better known as Niu Niu, fell from the window of her apartment in July. Her fall was broken when passer-by Wu Juping ran to catch her.
The toddler's grandmother had gone out to fetch laundry, thinking she was asleep.
Niu Niu perforated her spleen, liver and stomach and injured her lungs, kidneys, brain, heart and spine, as well as her limbs and eyesight.
The accident happened shortly after she had eaten lunch, and when her fall was broken the food entered her abdominal cavity, causing a severe infection. She was in a coma for 10 days.
Wu's arm was broken in several places. She was given Chinese bone-setting therapy at Fuyang Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedic Hospital, which offered her free treatment, and "her bones are healing stably, meaning she can now rest at home as an outpatient," said hospital vice president Jin Dengfeng.
Niu Niu is recovering well, according to doctors at No. 2 Hospital of Zhejiang University's School of Medicine, who said all her fractures and injured organs have healed, her vision has returned to normal, and despite the nerves in her left leg remaining impaired, she can walk unaided.
Her father, Zhang Zhonghua, said: "The muscles of her left hand remains atrophic, so it cannot stretch without help, and she cannot fully stretch her left Achilles tendon."
Yan Wei, Niu Niu's doctor in charge, said: "The future depends a lot on Niu Niu's active movement. The hospital will observe her for a while to see whether other treatments will be necessary."
