Womanizing monks turn out to be freelance singers

TWO men who disguised themselves as monks and cavorted with women in Beijing were actually freelance singers, the Beijing News reported today.

Zhao Wenbo, a native of northeastern Heilongjiang Province, and Ren Chuankun, a native of eastern Anhui Province, occasionally worked for Beijing FSTC Music Company, said Jiang Xinxin, the company's general manager.

Zhao once told Jiang that he was swindled 100,000 yuan (US$15,900) by his former boss, a Buddhist devotee, and decided to "draw public attention to sham Buddhists" by so-called performance art, Jiang told the paper.

The two men were detained last week in the city's Fuyuan Buddhist Temple when they were spotted posing for pictures with two women. Beijing police are still investigating their offences, the report said.

Outraged monks in Beijing helped police to capture the two men because they did huge damage to the image of Buddhists after photos of the two womanizing monks circulated on the Internet.
