Woman's remains found in pond near another where 5 children drowned

A woman's remains were retrieved yesterday from a pond near the one where five missing children drowned last month in east China's Zhejiang Province, said local authorities today.

Wang Hui'e, 36-year-old mother of two daughters, disappeared on Feb. 28 and was reported missing to police by her family Monday, said Cao Weiqiang with the publicity department of Tiantai County Committee of the Communist Party of China. The pond was five meters away from the one where five children's bodies were discovered, said Cao.

Wang's body was retrieved around 10:30 a.m. in a pond less than one km from her home in Huangwu village, Tiantai County, Taizhou City.

Police are investigating her death.

The five children, three girls and two boys aged 7 to 13, disappeared on Feb. 18 and their bodies were found in a fish pond on Feb. 22.

Police investigations showed the children accidentally drowned.

Families of the five children have signed a compensation agreement, worth 480,000 yuan (70,311 U.S. dollars), with the person leasing the fish pond, on Feb. 28. Enditem
