Work on bridge begins
WORKERS yesterday began building the first pier for a massive bridge that will span the Minjiang River in east China's Fujian Province.
The two-way railway bridge will stretch 7,637 meters and is a key part of the Xiangtang-Putian Railway.
The project is designed to improve links between Jiangxi, an inland province, and the eastern seaboard, according to Xiangtang-Putian Railway Co Ltd.
The bridge will connect a tunnel exit with Daode Mountain in Minhou near Fuzhou City, the provincial capital of Fujian, and Fuzhou Railway Station.
The bridge will span the Beijing-Fuzhou Freeway, 316 National Highway, Minjiang River and a flood control embankment.
The bridge will cost 590 million yuan (US$86.77 million) and will take 30 months to complete because of its complexity.
