Work safety chief faces bribery trial

HUNAN Province's former top work safety official is on trial for power abuse and taking more than 2 million yuan (US$293,006) in bribes.

Xie Guangxiang, 59, former director of Hunan Administration of Work Safety, allegedly sheltered corrupt officials and mine owners involved in fatal accidents in return during his tenure from 1996 to 2008, today's Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported.

He took the money on more than 20 occasions from 11 people - mostly his colleagues, friends and mine owners, Hunan Intermediate People's Court in central China was told.

Of the total, he took 1.1 million yuan alone and another 120,000 yuan with his wife and the other 962,800 yuan with his son,

His wife and son were tried in separate cases.

On one occasion, Xie took 200,000 yuan from Xiangtan Shuangma Construction Project Co Ltd to win a deal to build offices for the work safety administration. He later had his wife and son take another 680,000 yuan from the company.

Xie also took 170,000 yuan from his friend and colleague, Liu Shiyuan, the court was told.

Liu was investigated for corruption in 2002. Learning this, Xie pressured the county government to dismiss the investigation. The following year, Xie promoted Liu to director of Jiahe County Administration of Work Safety.

Xie also took 220,000 yuan from Deng Janhui, owner of an unlicensed mine, and in return helped to lessen his punishment after a fatal accident that killed 22 miners and injured more than 100 others in 2005, the court was told.

As a result, Deng received only economic and administrative punishment, rather than criminal penalties.
