Work safety chief sacked as Tianjin toll rises to 139
YANG Dongliang, who is under investigation for coruption, has been dismissed from his post as director of the State Administration of Work Safety.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced the investigation into Yang on August 18 for “severe violation of discipline and law.”
The 61-year-old served as vice mayor of Tianjin from 2001 to May 2012 before he was appointed work safety director.
Prior to 2001, he worked for the Tianjin government and state-owned firms in Tianjin as well as oilfield firms in north China.
The investigation was announced six days after warehouse explosions in Tianjin that killed 139 people. Authorities said yesterday that 34 others remain missing.
All the dead have been identified, including 84 firefighters and eight policemen. The missing people include 20 firefighters and three policemen.
Meanwhile, 527 people remain in hospital, 34 of them in serious condition. A total of 272 patients have been discharged.
Two blasts ripped through the warehouse in Tianjin Port where large amounts of toxic chemicals were stored, including around 700 tons of sodium cyanide, around 11:30pm on August 12.
Excessive levels of cyanide have been detected in water samples from six monitoring locations inside an exclusion zone.
