Work safety supervisor gets 6 years for bribery

THE former deputy director of Bengbu City Administration for Work Safety in eastern Anhui Province was sentenced to six years in prison for graft, a local court said yesterday.

Wang Wenjie was accused of taking 90,000 yuan (US$14,175) in bribes over the past four years and all his illegal money has confiscated, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Wang accepted 60,000 yuan from Zhao Xinmin, a glass factory owner, to reduce his fines and punishment after a gas leak poisoned six workers and killed three of them in 2007.

Wang reduced Zhao's fines from 200,000 yuan to 70,000 yuan and allowed the factory to resume production without informing high authorities, the report said.

He also accepted 30,000 yuan from other enterprises for giving them privileges.
