Worker trapped in shaft

RESCUERS are continuing their efforts to save a worker who has been trapped 18 meters below the surface of the sea for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.

The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shaft in which he was working at 9am yesterday. The shielding canister buckled under a sudden increase in hydraulic pressure from a flood tide, according to local media reports.

The shaft, which is part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the shaft, which is joined to a cement column, when the incident happened.

Rescue staff said: "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The warped section, about 2 to 4 meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3 centimeters wide at the narrowest part."

Thankfully, the shaft has not fractured, though it is seriously warped.

Rescue efforts started at 10am yesterday and Fan has received supplies.
