Workers find baby alive just before his cremation
A BABY boy pronounced dead by a doctor was found alive by a worker moments before his body was due to be cremated at a funeral home in Hefei, capital of eastern Anhui Province.
The seven-day-old, who had been born with birth defects, was sent back to the Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment, the People’s Daily website reported. His current condition is not known.
Hospital Director Jin Yulian said the doctor who confirmed the death has been suspended and a nurse who sent the baby to the funeral home sacked, the website reported.
Jin said that before the baby was pronounced dead, his parents had made a decision that lifesaving measures be withheld due to his condition.
She didn’t say what his birth defects were or whether he suffered from any other disease.
According to an anonymous insider quoted by the website, none of the boy’s relatives were present when he was returned to hospital yesterday morning, just three hours after he had been sent to the funeral home.
According to local news portal ahwang.cn, the funeral home received the baby because the hospital had issued a death certificate. But workers found he was moving and making noises when they carried out a routine check.
