Workers flock to Foxconn's Zhengzhou plant

FOXCONN'S move to inland Henan Province has brought boom to the local job market as thousands of people joined a mile-long queue last week to submit job applications even though the company's name was tarnished by a string of suicides at its Shenzhen factory early this year.

The world's largest electronics contract manufacturer is going to hire more than 150,000 workers in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, by the end of 2011. But the company has already received 30 times more resumes, Beijing News reported today.

Foxconn is causing a big stir in Henan Province with highly attractive salary packages. It will hire hundreds of mid-level managers with a promised annual income of 100,000 (US$14,750) to 200,000 yuan.

Foxconn's expansion into inland provinces is seen as aggressive by local enterprises because its high wages triggered a wave of job hopping. Some local employers were compeled to raise wages to retain employees, the report said.

"Foxconn's arrival apparently raised Zhengzhou's average salary," said a human resources official with a local company. "A normal worker in Zhengzhou used to be happy with 800 yuan a month, but the minimum wage at Foxconn is 1,200 yuan."
