World's largest political party keeps on growing
THE Communist Party of China, the world's largest political party, grew even bigger last year as more people sought membership.
Party membership in 2009 swelled to 77.99 million people - an increase of more than 2 million or nearly 3 percent from 2008, Wang Qinfeng, deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at a press conference.
The number of members is almost equal to Germany's total population.
Wang said 20 million people applied to join in 2009, but only 10 percent were accepted.
Applicants for Party membership need recommendations from current members and his or her company or work unit leader showing a strong degree of Party loyalty, plus "good behavior." They also have to submit essays expressing support for the Party.
Of the nearly 78 million Party members, about 18.5 million were under 35, and close to 28 million held a college degree or above, Wang said. He said more than 640,000 of the country's 2.77 million enterprises, including 438,000 non-public enterprises, had set up their own grassroots Party organs.
He said Party members had taken the lead in helping China host the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics in 2008, celebrate the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China last year, and in the relief work of the Sichuan earthquake in 2008 and the Yushu earthquake in April this year.
