World's tallest building fears
WORK has begun on the world's tallest building in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, amid safety concerns from experts.
Changsha-based construction company Broad Sustainable Building Co Ltd plans to erect the 838-meter-high Sky City in seven months at a cost of 9 billion yuan (US$1.47 billion), National Business Daily reported.
However, experts have voiced fears about the speed of the project, which got under way on Saturday, and the technology.
The schedule includes 120 days of prefabrication before on-site work. Some 90 percent of the building will be assembled in workshops.
The skyscraper will have its roof structure capped in April next year, plans show.
In comparison, the current world's tallest building, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai, took five years to build.
"Placing the emphasis on fast progress means sacrificing quality," said architect Lu Meng on China National Radio.
Crews must also wait until initial levels are stable before continuing, said the architect.
"Human beings can't always decide everything," Lu said.
And Yin Zhi, director of Tsinghua Urban Planning Design Institute, said the technology has never been used overseas.
But Zhang Yue, chief executive of Broad Group, owner of Broad Sustainable Building, insisted Sky City will be so solidly built that it will be able to withstand a magnitude-9 earthquake.
It will feature six underground floors and 202 above the ground, and accommodate 30,000 people, transported by 104 high-speed elevators.
