Would-be rescuers end up as hostages

TWO policemen and two community security workers were taken hostage while trying to rescue a hostage in a South China village, the Beijing News reported today.

The officers and the hostage were released a day later on April 1 when provincial police arrived on the scene and arrested the five.

The Xinlong police office in Hainan Province's Dongfang City received a call for help from seven workers at the Huaqiao Farm on the night of March 31. Four villagers from the farm's Chatou Village were fighting workers from a construction firm on the farm. Injuries were reported on both sides.

Seeking revenge, the four got dozens of other villagers to take a company worker surnamed Wang hostage and asked the company for a ransom. Wang was badly beaten up by the villagers, the report said.

The director of the Xinlong police office, another police officer and two community security guards went to try to settle the conflict.

But they were also taken hostage by the villagers.

At 5.50am on April 1, Hainan provincial police arrived and rescued the five hostages.
